Oct 08, prcardi rated it did not like it Shelves: Wizard is the second book of the Gaea Trilogy iohn John Varley. She comes before Gaea with a serious attitude problem. Wizard, the second, begins briefly as mythological satire and then mellows into a traditional quest in the lineage of epic-fantasy novels albeit taking place on another planet.
Token guy, Chris, gets pushed into leadership in several places where he is just not qualified—a nod perhaps to our society where, in hospitals, people ask for male unqualified interns when well-qualified female doctors are on the scene. By and large, it is a feminist novel—however, Varley makes everything hinge on Chris in a way that, to my way of thinking, gives him undue influence, especially in sexual terms. He has written several novels and numerous short stories.
Chris gets to be the lucky? This novel is unusual in that the majority of its main characters are women, with earth-guy Chris thrown in as the token male to be used to contrast everything with. The characters have more depth.
Early on, our first glimpse of a Titanide: The setup allows for some extremely improbable scenarios much like Strata again and he exploits this to the hilt: I like the second book of the Gaea trilogy possibly the best — things get kind of wacky in the third one, which I am going to have to find in actual book form, since for some reason only the first two varoey available as ebooks.
The other is Robin, who comes from an ultra-radical sect of witches in the Wiccan sense living in a habitat on the far side of the Moon. The middle book is the weakest of the three, but still good. Jul 15, Bradley rated it really liked it Shelves: Of course, with this fantastic alien landscape, there’s the Titanides, varkey 29 times over ambisexual centaurs who like to do it every which farley they can, even with humans, and killer blimps and vast and amazing adventurous locations full of glory and beauty.
There are serious conflicts and resolutions, but not with idealistic happiness. Sep 23, Vincent rated it it was ok. Dec 26, Falbs rated it really liked it. It’s kind of amazing that I liked Robin considering how annoying her ignorance can be early on. Gaby Jphn has taken up the slack, carrying out special projects for Gaea such as building the Circum-Gaea Highway, in return for which she gets some of the benefits Cirocco enjoys, including apparently perpetual youth.
The jump-forward varrley time and the feeling of retreading might make this a bit of a hard sell, but if you loved the first book, I’m sure you’ll have a great time with the insane trip that is Wizard.

Gaby and Cirocco have a hidden agenda: They encounter two characters from the last book. Books by John Varley.
Just as Titan begins in a somewhat normal universe and escalates into an absurd universe, so Wizard picks up at the same gonzo level that Titan ended at and escalates into something even more absurd. She arranges for streams of people looking for miracle cures to come to her from Earth, and then sets them a task: Into this situation arrive two “pilgrims”, come to Gaea basically by lottery, to seek a cure for what ails them — avrley one case a syndrome that creates a schizophrenic loss of awareness and control, wizafd a young man from Earth, and in the other, a genetic disorder that leads to epilepsy, sure to be passed on, in a young lesbian separatist ‘witch’ from the Coven, a LaGrangian colony in space.
Other books in the series. Human literature, which was all written by women, has been co-opted to seem as if it was mostly written by men. The responsibility for an entire race’s survival is more than Cirocco can bear; with resignation from her position as Wizard impossible and suicide ruled out by her love for the Titanides, her only release is alcohol-fueled oblivion. Feb 27, Lisa Harvey rated it it was amazing.
VERY strange species that Varley’s come up with. A sequel to Titanin which Varley invented Gaea–an enormous sentient artifact orbiting Saturn while serving as whimsical demigoddess to the several races of creatures whom she has amused herself by creating within her remarkable topoggraphy.
Cirocco, the Wizard, and Gaby her friend are johm two returning characters from book one. With Gaby, Cirocco and four Titanides they set out on a heroic trek.
Trivia About Wizard Gaea, 2. Gaea was the Supreme Titan, the Fairest of the Fair. It contains graphic descriptions of Titanide sex and alien-human sex.
She has become a hateful, violent year-old who hopes eventually to have children, if Gaea can cure her. Gaea herself, more captious than ever, has taken to encouraging human pilgrims to seek miracle cures and has cooked up an elaborate practical joke involving Cirocco and the future of the lovely centaurian race known as the Titanides.
I just believe in people coping with their lives as best they can. Despite this, our lesbian witch, Robin, does take one shot at the heterosexual side of the street. She finds herself in one of the Arctic cold zones of the habitat, varlwy almost dies before being rescued.
