Despite the troubles with alcohol that beset his two main characters and Chandler himself, he has a wonderful way of capturing the allure Marlowe finds in drinking with Lennox: Cissy Chandler died inafter a long illness.

The two victims in the story seem to be stand-ins for Chandler himself. Perhaps you have to be American to really appreciate the era they were written in. It’s true I read mysteries only now and then, but the Inspector Singh series in my modest opinion is wittier and certainly as well or larvo better written not all the books, but several. There are too many metaphors, cliches and 50’s slang phrases for me. I wanted to clear an innocent man.

They pass through your life, your mind, your heart, bundled in their own worlds with their wants and needs and feelings.
