Anton and Edgar meet over beer and discuss Dark versus Light philosophy. Unlike the previous book, this is told from the Dark Ones’ point of view and by three different protagonists. Regardless of which side you take, or whether you even care about anything that goes on in that part of the world, the disgusting remarks by Mr. It’s to me a very Soviet way of looking at things, stemming from the time where there was no doubt that the intentions of those in power may have nothing to do with your well-being and that you may be easily sacrificed in order to achieve “the greater good”.

The Twilight is still largely an unknown. In the second, a powerful stranger comes to Moscow and seems to upset the balance of power between the Dark and the Light. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys lkkyanenko works, epic stories about the struggle of Light vs. As Svetlana leaves, she tells Zabulon, “May no one ever love you. Only a zero point magician can get to the 7th. Unless enchanted, wwatch objects can lukyaneno affect beings on the first level. Each level is harder to get to and accessible only to powerful Others; this is due in large part to the fact that the Twilight drains energy much more quickly and greedily in deeper levels.
This may be because there are very lukjanenko truly powerful magicians who can successfully navigate its levels. Acting on an internal instinct whose source he cannot understand, he is able to protect himself from a werewolf and board a train to Moscow. Like “Night Watch,” “Day Watch” introduces us to magicians, shape-shifters, and vampires that must mind the crossing of t’s and dotting of i’s in magical law in order to keep a treaty between the powers of light and dark so that a conflagration lukyanennko best or apocalypse at worst can be avoided.
As events unfold he discovers that Olga can speak and appear briefy as a human, and is a sorceress trapped in an owl’s body as a punishment. Being a member of the Dark Others is more a choice towards individualization. He finally finds the Dark being and is astonished when he discovers it is young Egor.
Intriguingly, it begins with statements opposite to those which open Night Watch.
My only complaint is that sometimes all the plotting gets kind of complicated. Yet at the denouement I found myself sympathising with her more than a little – that is quite some achievement on the part of Lukyenenko, who is, at his dat, a very capable writer.
The first part wafch the story deals with various involved parties travelling to Prague where the trial will be heldthe second part involves the characters meeting in a number of different configurations and talking, the third part involves the trial itself. A slightly prosaic translation notwithstanding, the appeal of the series for English-language readers is the overlay of fantastical elements on the troubled, complicated world of the former Soviet Union. The only way lukyaanenko survive in the Twilight is to slowly feed it energy. The Day Watch film is based on the second and the third part of the novel, not the follow-up novel Day Watch. I also enjoy such stories that show that, though there is a struggle between the forces of Light and Dark, it could be disastrous if lukyanekno side ever gained a significant advantage.
