Breathing Underwater

It’s okay not to finish your novel in high school. I may read it again because I want to know every detail of this book.

This book is written mostly through Nick’s journal entries. Their relationship was complicated as Caitlyn wanted a restraining order. I went to the library and took out books on writing. There are lots of books written about dating violence but this book is very important and note worthy because it is from the point of view of the abusive boyfriend.

I would also recommend all young women to read this book. The ending scene with Nick’s best friend rings a bit hollow, but as Nick’s past comes to light, both the circumstances and his owning up to his actions carry heavy emotional weight in this gripping tale. Teenage love is a strange thing but, when it’s all you want, it can be very scary. I could kill it if I wanted.

Set in Miami and told in a split narrative, the novel juxtaposes Nick’s journal entries about his past relationship with Caitlin alongside the current challenges of going back to school with his friends turned against him, his counseling sessions and life with his father.

He also has to deal with the anger management classes including the teacher, his peers and himself. However, I did like that it was from the abusers perspective and shows that tlinn can aelx the cycle if you take responsibility and learn to be a better bretahing.

But to create change like I suspect the author was trying to do, I think it fails miserably. According to him, what went on between them wasn’t anyone’s business, including that counselor and the room of freaks he’s been told to sit with everyday of the week.
